The Academy is in support of a film law that would strengthen local production and normalize the presence of the Catalan language on theater screens
The Catalan Film Academy met today with the Adviser for Culture, Joan Manuel Tresseres, to learn firsthand about the Film Law initiative which the Government is to discuss during the current term’s parliamentary sessions. The secretary general of the Department, Eduard Voltas, the director of the Catalan Institute of Cultural Industries (ICIC), Antoni Lladó, and the director of the cultural office’s Audiovisual Section, Ferrán Tomás, were also in attendance.
As stated by the Academy’s president, Joel Joan and the Academy Board:
“The Film Law initiative opens up new opportunities to consolidate a national cinema, as it emphasizes digitalization, industrial expansion and support for talent. The Academy will back the Adviser in the challenge to secure a Film Law for Catalonia. With respect to the presence of the Catalan language in theater screens, the Academy supports strengthening local production. Nevertheless, in any country the public has the opportunity to choose the language of a film, whether dubbed or subtitled, something which does not hold true for Catalonia. It follows, then, for the executive powers to take corrective measures against this anomaly. The Academy Board has asked the cultural office to arrive at a consensus with the film industry on the details of this legislative project.”
